Chapel and Old Russian Well, at Fort Ross State Historic Park, California. This chapel is a reconstruction of the one built in the mid 1820s during the time the Russian American Company settled Fort Ross (1812-1841). It was the first Russian Orthodox Chapel in North America south of Alaska. Photo by Daniel F. Murley.

The Rotchev house today. This is the only remaining structure built during the period when the Russian American Company settled Fort Ross (1812-1841). It was refurbished for Alexander Gavrilovich Rotchev, the last manager of Ross. In the mid 1930s, Rotchev and his wife, the former Princess Elena Gargarina, and their children lived there until the fort was disbanded in 1841. Today this structure is a National Historic Landmark. This Russian Orthodox Chapel was built about 1824. Though plainly furnished, it did mark the earliest advance of the Russian Orthodox Church into North America at that time after the Russians left. The building served in many useful ways until it collapsed in the 1906 earthquake. Restored first in 1916 and more completely in 1955, it burned to the ground in 1970. In 1973 the chapel was carefully restored to its original appearance. Photo by Mark Henderson.
